SAPS Plans to Get Bulletproof Bakkie Fleet

SAPS is bolstering its resources via a planned fleet of armoured double-cab bakkies. Here’s all you need to know…

Currently out for tender, a proposed two-year contract aims to armour-plate a fleet of SAPS vehicles to Ballistic Level B6 or better. This is to improve officer safety in high-risk scenarios, without compromising the versatility of these vehicles.

According to ProtectionWeb, among the models specified are the Ford Ranger and Volkswagen Amarok. These end product will require comprehensive ballistic protection against 7.62×39 mm and 7.62×51 mm rounds, with the option to further upgrade to NATO’s STANAG Level 1 protection on vertical surfaces. The armouring must nevertheless remain discreet.

Key features include 360-degree ballistic shielding, reinforced glass with spall mitigation and a armoured floor to protect against potential explosive threats. Even functional elements like side windows, which must slide halfway down, receive meticulous attention with upgraded electrical mechanisms designed to handle the added weight of protective glass. The reinforced doors, pillars and roof are also completed, while critical components such as the fuel tank, radiator and battery are shielded to maintain operational integrity in hostile situations.

The performance enhancements don’t stop there. Upgraded suspensions with heavy-duty shocks, adjustable springs and custom braking systems look to ensure these bakkies can handle the additional load. High-performance brake pads and durable rims paired with run-flat tyres provide reliable handling during emergencies. Corrosion-resistant metal treatments and a 30-day repair turnaround for all armour-related fixes add practical durability to the package, ensuring the vehicles remain field-ready for extended periods.

While the technical requirements may sound complex, the underlying goal is straightforward: provide officers with robust, dependable vehicles that offer protection without sacrificing functionality. Whether navigating urban streets or rural terrains, these armoured bakkies promise a safer working environment for those who put their lives on the line daily.
