SVI Engineering has delved into its records to reveal the vehicles that have proven most popular with its customers seeking armoured protection over the past few years. Unsurprisingly, the lineup mainly comprises vehicles that are already popular in the South African market, with robust ladder-frame bakkies and SUVs dominating the list. Here’s the top five…
1. Toyota Hilux

Topping the list is the Toyota Hilux, South Africa’s best-selling bakkie. SVI offers a range of armouring solutions for the Hilux, including:
- B2 SVI Lite: A cost-effective partial armour package
- B4 and B6 Discreet: Full protection from handguns up to .44 Magnum (B4) or assault rifles including AK-47s and R5s (B6)
- Stopgun V2.0: A semi-discreet, rapid-deployment kit for high-threat scenarios
2. Ford Ranger

Another hugely popular double-cab bakkie, the Ford Ranger is compatible with:
- B2 SVI Lite: Partial coverage
- B4 and B6 Discreet: 360-degree full-armour options
- Stopgun V3.0: Available for all three body styles, this package does not void the manufacturer’s warranty or any active service/maintenance plans
3. Toyota Fortuner

As South Africa’s best-selling ladder-frame SUV, the Fortuner holds a high demand for armouring. Available protection packages include:
- B2 Partial Armour
- B4 and B6 Discreet: Like the Hilux, though notably not compatible with the Stopgun system
4. Toyota Land Cruiser 300

SVI purchased one of the first Land Cruiser 300s delivered in South Africa to fast-track the development of armoured solutions. Current offerings include:
- B2 Partial Armour
- B4 and B6 Discreet Packages
- Optional VIP luxury interior conversion: Featuring a centre console and premium seating in the second row
5. Volkswagen Amarok

Built on the same platform as the Ford Ranger, the latest Amarok benefits from shared development. Available protection options mirror those of the Ranger, including:
- B2 Partial Armour
- B4 and B6 Discreet: Offering 360-degree coverage
SVI Business Development Director, Nicol Louw, explained why certain models are consistently chosen for armouring: “SVI receives daily enquiries regarding armouring options for a wide range of vehicles. While we occasionally make exceptions for comparatively niche models – converting a Maserati Levante to B4 discreet, for instance – we generally advise customers to stick with the tried-and-tested vehicles. This further serves to reduce the build time as the required development has already taken place.”
