In July 2025, naamsa, the Automotive business council of South Africa, reported that aggregate new-vehicle sales reached a total of 51 383 units sold, an increase of 13.4% (or 6 931 units), over the same month in 2024. And in August 2025, the momentum gained from the previous three months continued to show an increase.
According to naamsa, August 2025 delivered the highest monthly sales since October 2019 once again. Aggregate new vehicle sales in the eighth month of 2025 increased to 51 880 units (up 7 444 units) over July 2024.
Toyota continued to top the sales charts, with the Japanese automaker’s South African arm registering 13 276 new cars sold in August 2025 – an increase of 1 004 over the firm’s July 2025 overall sales figure (12 694). Suzuki retained second place; registering 6 534 units sold. Compared to the firm’s July 2025 figure, Suzuki sold 277 more vehicles in August 2025. Volkswagen maintained third place despite recording a 217-unit decrease in sales (compared to July 2025) for an overall figure of 5 521 units sold.
While the aforementioned brands retained their podium positions, and Hyundai, Ford and GWM continued to trail behind them, there were some changes to the chart: Chery, who placed eighth in Jule 2025, moved up one spot, relegating Isuzu to eighth place, while Renault just bested Mahindra, seeing the French automaker make a return to the top 10. Noteworthy, Kia remained in the ninth spot despite a 349-unit decrease in sales.
