Jaecoo South Africa has confirmed the J5 compact SUV will join its product portfolio “soon”. Here’s what you can expect…

In September 2024, we reported on Chery subsidiaries Jaecoo and Omoda’s “promising” plans for South Africa, with the Chinese automotive brands aiming to bolster their local product portfolios with the introduction of several new models in the coming months. From Jaecoo’s stable, this includes the J6, an adventure-focused, all-electric 4×4, and the compact SUV you see here — the J5.
Scheduled to make landfall on SA shores “soon”, the SA-bound Jaecoo J5 “aims to set a new standard in the compact-SUV class,” the carmaker says, adding that the upcoming model “combines clever technology, practicality, and comfort”.

National Brand and Marketing Manager of Omoda and Jaecoo Shannon Gahagan said:
“The Jaecoo J5 is designed for those who crave flair and individuality. With its innovative features, elegant design, and thoughtfully crafted accessories, it stands out from the crowd and encourages you to explore the world on your terms … Introducing a more compact and competitively priced model will appeal to more consumers looking to join the Jaecoo family.”

Although the SA model line-up has yet to be announced, along with local pricing, the company has disclosed some information about the J5. For starters, the small SUV will feature a 13.2-inch touchscreen infotainment system, replete with “smart” satellite navigation and “entertainment applications”, which we expect will include Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. A large panoramic sunroof is included in the J5 package. In addition, the seats were “specially designed” to accommodate pets, the firm says.
The J5’s “tastefully styled” bodywork is underpinned by a suspension setup of the independent variety. Adding to its provisos of lifestyle SUV, the J5 is equipped with a roof rack, which has a carrying capacity of 75 kg. The (braked) towing capacity is rated at 1 250 kg.
