A glance at our Top 12 Best Buys feature in the April issue, highlights just how well Suzuki Auto South Africa is doing in this market. Interestingly, despite the appeal of a self-shifting transmission for negotiating ever-increasing congestion, we’ve long noted our penchant towards Suzuki products fitted with a manual gearbox. The reasoning is two-fold: one is that Suzuki’s manual transmissions are known for being some of the best in the business for modulation, precision and all-around usability. By contrast, in applications like the Fronx, the self-shifting option takes the form of a four-speed unit. As is its Toyota Starlet Cross twin – and highlighted in the test of the MG ZS – an automatic transmission with this few gear ratios tends to labour when it comes to spirited throttle inputs, including on long uphill sections of a route.

While it’ll be difficult to upstage its Top 12 segment-winning new Swift sibling in terms of broad appeal, the raised ride height Fronx continues to impress with its characterful styling and composed ride quality.
