Born on this day in 1964 at the New York World’s Fair, the Ford Mustang didn’t know it yet but it was about to rewrite history, and fortunately stay with the motoring world for many years of smokey burnouts to come. Despite its origins across the Atlantic, the Mustang nameplate has earned just as loyal a following in South Africa as it has in the States. Looking back to this anniversary, within two years of its original debut, over 1 million units were sold!

Not only dominating sales in those formative years, the model also made it onto the big screen and became a pop culture icon most famed for appearances in Bullitt and Gone in 60 Seconds.

Although it took over 50 years for the iconic pony car to officially arrive with a huff on South African shores, the wait was worth it. In 2015, Ford began building right-hand drive Mustangs for global markets, and the response locally was nothing short of impressive. Although 4 200 units sold in this decade are a far cry from the 22 000 Ford Mustangs that were pre-ordered on the first day of sales in 1964, it does remain one of the most popular sports cars in the country.

If the standard model was simply too demure for buyers, Ford South Africa had some special editions clandestinely hidden in their sleeves. Over the years, the retro-cool Bullitt edition and track-focused Mach 1 were two that honed the recipe further. Now in its seventh generation and soldiering on with naturally aspirated V8 power, the Pony car galloped into South Africa in 2024. Now you know why you’ll potentially see a few more Mustangs today than normal!
