The football world awoke to the tragic news that 28-year-old Liverpool Football Club striker Diogo Jota passed away after being involved in a high-speed accident while behind the wheel of his Lamborghini supercar.
Jota, who signed for Liverpool in 2020, was travelling with his brother, André Filipe, on the Rías Baixas Highway near Palacios de Sanabria in northwestern Spain when reports indicated a burst tyre on his Lamborghini Aventador caused a loss of control before the car left the road, bursting into flames on impact. No other vehicles were reported to be involved in the accident, with little chance, considering the extent of the damage to the Lamborghini, of Jota and his brother surviving.
Jota, who scored a total of 47 times in 123 matches for Liverpool, also made 49 appearances for the Portuguese national side, scoring 14 times. His 25-year-old brother, André, was signed for a Portuguese second-division club. The tragic news comes just 10 days after Jota married his long-term girlfriend, Rute Cardoso, mother to the couple’s three children.
Cristiano Ronaldo, Jota’s Portugal national team captain, took to the social media platform X to proclaim, “It doesn’t make sense. We were only just in the national team together, you had only just got married. To your family, your wife and your children, I send my condolences and wish them all the strength in the world. I know you’ll always be with them. Rest in peace, Diogo and André. We’ll all miss you.”
Former Liverpool manager and the man at the helm of the club when Jota joined from Wolverhampton Wanderers wrote, “This is a moment where I struggle! There must be a bigger purpose! But I can’t see it. I’m heartbroken to hear about the passing of Diogo and his brother, André. Diogo was not only a fantastic player, but also a great friend, a loving and caring husband and father! We will miss you so much!”
