Fiat South Africa has whipped the wraps of the TRIS; marking the debut of the Italian automaker’s first “micro-mobility” vehicle for SA and select sub-Saharan African markets. The small three-wheeler EV takes aim at “last-mile” delivery solutions in urban life.
Said Kabelo Rabotho, Director of Micromobility at Stellantis SA, “The micro-mobility category is far bigger than any one format. At its simplest, micro-mobility is about matching the journey to the most efficient tool for that journey. Not every trip needs a large car. Not every delivery needs a van. We are not replacing other forms of transport; rather we are filling a ‘gap’ that, in the context of Africa, is becoming increasingly apparent as the continent grows.”
Stellantis-developed, and designed in-house at Fiat’s headquarters in Turin, the TRIS represents an affordable way to achieve micro-mobility needs in congested urban areas. With a claimed 90 km range, lightweight design, and 500 kg payload capacity, the TRIS looks to tackle all relevant concerns with a one-vehicle solution.
The powertrain comprises a single electric motor with maximum outputs of 9 kW and 45 N.m of torque. Regenerative braking will come as standard to assist in preserving some charge while operating for longer periods. The battery has a capacity of 6.9 kWh, and charges from 0-80% in a claimed 3.5 hours via the integrated 220 V plug.
The single-seater’s interior features a 5.7-inch digital instrument cluster and several storage compartments.
Fiat TRIS SA launch date
Stellantis has confirmed the TRIS will be available in SA and select sub-Saharan markets from the end of 2026.
